Every job is done by a licensed plumber, and gasfitting sits under the same QBCC licence as the water work. Ring (07) 3523 6417 and describe what has happened.

Your First Moves Before You Call

What to do first when something goes wrong:

  • A burst or a leak you can't control: shut off the main valve at the water meter and call (07) 3523 6417.
  • You can smell gas: turn the gas appliance off, open doors and windows, and don't flick any switch on or off. If the smell doesn't fade, close the gas at the meter or bottle, then call (07) 3523 6417. Call 000 if you can still smell it.
  • Small leaks and dripping taps: these can wait for an appointment. Call (07) 3523 6417 to book.

We're available 24/7, 7 days a week, and there's no added charge for nights, weekends or public holidays.

What Counts as a Plumbing Emergency

Four faults cannot wait: a gas smell indoors, a burst service pipe or serious leak, a failed water or gas supply, and a toilet that will not flush or fill.

Rentals follow a set list instead. Queensland tenancy law spells out which repairs count as emergencies, and anything the law leaves off that list is routine.

A leak inside the meter box, or sodden ground around it while the dial stands still, belongs to Urban Utilities, so report it there. Sodden ground with the dial still turning puts the water on your side of the meter, and that is a job for us.

Stop the Water and Gas Before You Call

Work from the fault outward. Close the isolation valve at the fixture first, and the rest of the house keeps its water.

No valve there? The stop tap on your meter shuts the whole property, turning clockwise to close. Meters sit in a little box flush with the ground, between the road and your boundary.

Check one thing first: nothing that depends on the supply, a hot water unit especially, should be left to run dry when you shut the meter.

Gas needs a different order:

  • Switch the appliance off, open doors and windows, and leave every light and switch alone.
  • Shut the gas down at the meter or your gas bottle where that is safe to reach.
  • Call 000 if the smell hangs around once the supply is off. The supplier's emergency line sits on your gas bill, top right, under the headings for emergencies and leaking gas.

Anything gas on the property then goes to our gas leak repairs page.

Emergency Repairs That Need a Licensed Plumber

Two licences split this work. A licensed gasfitter takes anything to do with gas, and a QBCC licensee mends burst pipes and clears sanitary drains.

Gas work covers repairs, servicing, pressure testing and the certification paperwork, and Queensland keeps all of it for licensed gasfitters.

Repairing a burst pipe is minor work: a licensee must do it, no permit applies and nothing lodges with the QBCC. Unblocking a sanitary drain sits in the same minor category, so no council approval holds anything up.

A Form 4 is the notice a licensee files with the QBCC after notifiable work, and none of these repairs is notifiable. Your part is the valves; the licensed repair stays with us.

What a Burst Looks Like Here

Bursts on our run start under the lawn more often than under the sink. The station-side weatherboard homes still run galvanised service lines, and their threaded joints are the usual failure point in soil that stays wet between the two creeks.

The first sign is usually a soft green strip going spongy at the front of the block, not water on a floor, so leak detection earns its keep and burst pipe repairs follow.

Drains under the prewar and postwar streets were laid in earthenware before PVC existed, and those clay joints creep in ground that never dries, silting at every dip.

At the last census, 26.7 per cent of homes here were owned outright and another 40.5 per cent were paying one off, so most late calls come from owners rather than agents.

Night, Weekend and Public Holiday Calls

An isolated fault can sit until a booked visit; gas you can smell, sewage backing up or water on the move cannot, whatever the clock says.

A tap that drips or a tub that drains slowly holds for a weekday booking. Tenants judge it by the tenancy list, since a repair on that list is urgent work and the rest is not.

Banyo Same Day Plumbing charges an after-dark Sunday visit the same as a Tuesday morning: there is no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays. A cistern running all night wastes water quietly, and our toilet repairs page covers what it does to your bill.

Emergency Plumbing Questions

Call (07) 3523 6417

Should I ring a plumber now or wait until morning?

Close off whatever you can first, then judge by the damage. A dripping tap or a slow basin holds until a normal booking. A smell of gas, sewage rising or water spreading across the floor needs the phone picked up straight away, whatever the hour.

Where do I turn the water off at my Banyo house?

Your meter sits in a small below-ground box, set flush with the ground out near the front boundary. The stop tap on that meter turns clockwise to shut the water. Each fixture may also have an isolation valve closing that one tap alone, and check no hot water unit will run dry before you shut the meter.

Does an emergency repair need council approval?

No, neither the pipe repair nor the drain clear needs approval. Both are minor work in Queensland, so no permit applies and no paperwork goes to the QBCC. A Form 4 only follows notifiable jobs, like adding a fixture, and a QBCC licensee still has to do the repair itself.

I rent in Banyo. Who do I call when something breaks urgently?

Ring the emergency contact listed on your tenancy agreement as soon as you notice the fault. Telling them by phone is enough notice. The tenancy law decides which repairs are emergencies, and a job missing from that list gets booked as routine instead.

Who is allowed to fix a gas leak in Banyo?

A licensed gasfitter alone can do gas work: the repairs, the servicing, the pressure tests and the certification. Shut the supply at your meter or gas bottle first and air the place out. Call 000 if the smell hangs on after the gas is shut off.
