Tap Repairs in Banyo
A tap that drips through the night wastes water, sleep and money on the bill. Tap repairs in Banyo are steady work for us, because the suburb mixes 1940s weatherboard with postwar brick-veneer and fresh estates, and every era runs different tapware.

Which Part Fails in Your Tap
Two kinds of tap fill nearly every Australian sink and basin, and each seals with a different part. A washer tap presses a rubber washer down onto a brass valve seat to shut off the flow. A mixer tap blends hot and cold under one lever and seals with a ceramic disc cartridge instead.
On a washer tap, each handle winds its spindle through several full turns before the water stops. Under the spindle sits a small brass jumper valve, which rides the washer onto its seat each time you close the tap. Wear lands on the washer first, then on the seat.
A mixer lever swings only about a quarter turn. Inside the cartridge, two ceramic plates slide against each other to let water through or hold water back, and grit slowly grinds that pairing down. When the cartridge wears, the whole unit gets replaced, sized to the tap, because fittings differ between makes and models.

Where the Leak Shows and What It Means
A drip from the spout, even once the tap is shut tight, tells you the sealing part has worn through. Where else the water turns up narrows the fault down:
Dripping spout
the washer has gone, or the seat under the washer is scored, in a washer tap. In a mixer, the cartridge is finished.
Water around the handle
the leak escapes past a worn O-ring where the spindle passes, and the water shows while the tap runs.
Wet base or a damp cupboard below
worn O-rings, a loose connection under the bench, or a crack in the body.
Every tap should have a small isolation valve, so water stops at the fixture instead of the whole house. If the tap has no isolation valve of its own, close the stop tap at the meter by turning it clockwise. Check first that no appliance, such as a hot water system, needs the supply to stay on.
Left alone, one slow drip can push thousands of litres of paid water down the drain over a year. Garden taps and hose cocks have their own page at outdoor tap repairs, and the cistern side of the bathroom is covered at toilet repairs.

Tap Repairs for Owners and Tenants
One tap job sits outside licensed plumbing in Queensland. The QBCC lists a tap's jumper valve or washer as unregulated work, which anyone with the right knowledge and skill may do. The finished work still has to meet the standards, and that is the whole list.
Every other tap job goes to a licensed plumber. That covers cartridges, O-rings, re-seating a worn valve seat, and the tap itself. Swapping in an entirely new tap needs a licence too, and the QBCC guide uses exactly that job as its own example of licensed work.
Renting changes who calls, not who does the work. Under the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act, the owner or manager keeps the place in good repair for the whole tenancy, and you tell them as soon as something needs fixing.
A dripping tap is not on the Act's emergency list, which makes the repair routine, and the owner has a reasonable time to act after you report it. If nothing happens, the formal breach notice hands the owner or manager a week to remedy it. For the wider picture of fixtures and fittings, our tap and toilet work runs from washers through to full toilet repairs.

What Affects the Cost of a Tap Repair
Four things set the bill: the tap type, the part, seat or body damage, and how easily the water shuts off at the fixture or the meter. How many taps get done in one visit also plays its part.
You get the price as a fixed quote once the plumber has eyes on the job, with flat-rate pricing and no hidden fees.
A body that is cracked or badly corroded rules out a repair, and so does a leak that persists after fresh washers or cartridges go in. When fixing stops making sense, we can also fit a new tap.

How the Housing Mix Shapes the Work
Banyo is growing, and growth means new taps. Australian Bureau of Statistics area-level figures put estimated resident population growth at 8.5 per cent from 2020 to 2025, with 603 dwellings approved over five years, 183 of them in 2021-22 alone.
Much of that newest building sits on old army and factory land, in estates like Couture and Summerlin. One street hands us a brand-new mixer under a builder's bench, and the next a 1960s washer tap on a pitted seat, so the van goes out ready for both.

Tap Repair Questions From Banyo
Call (07) 3523 6417How do I stop my tap from dripping?
Swap out whatever part does the sealing. The QBCC's unregulated list covers only the jumper valve or washer, and that work still has to meet the standards. Every other tap repair, including fitting a whole new tap, belongs to a licensed plumber, so ring Banyo Same Day Plumbing and we will sort it.
Why does my tap keep dripping after I turn it off?
The sealing surface has worn out or been damaged. On a washer tap, the rubber has perished or the valve seat underneath is scored. On a mixer, the ceramic disc cartridge has given up the ghost.
What makes a mixer tap leak around the base?
One of three faults, usually. Worn O-rings inside the body, a nut under the bench that has wound itself loose, or a hairline crack in the body itself. The first two are simple repairs; the crack means a new tap.
Why does my mixer tap feel stiff to turn?
Grit or wear somewhere in the cartridge or spindle. When the cartridge is the culprit, the entire unit comes out and one of the correct model goes back in, because sizes and fittings vary between makes.
Is it worth repairing an old tap in a Banyo home?
Yes, while the body is sound. A washer, an O-ring or a cartridge is a small job that keeps the tap right for years. A cracked or heavily corroded body, or a leak that survives new parts, points to replacing the tap.
